A Visit to Past Tells the Story of the Present
When you hear about Buffalo, you don’t really hear anything at all about Lackawanna, the former home of Bethlehem Steel just over the city’s border.
Much of Buffalo’s fortunes before 1983 was built on the back of Lackawanna, where Bethlehem Steel employed tens of thousands of people and served as the backbone of the area’s economy and the lifeblood of its middle class.
Lackawanna played a major role, too, in my formative years. Much of my family lived there and I spent a large portion of my childhood and teen years there.
